TOP AWARD MAKES IT SIX OF THE BEST FOR HERITAGE BOAT LIFT

Historic Anderton Boat Lift has scooped a coveted VAQAS visitor stamp of approval for the sixth consecutive season.

This sought after accolade is granted by Visit Britain to selected attractions - and the 'Cathedral of Canals' is one of only a handful of Cheshire sites to receive this prestigious recognition.

Boat Lift Manager Tim Turner says the award reflects the continuing high quality visitor experience offered at Cheshire's most popular working heritage monument.

"The boat lift experience is rich in popular local culture and has so much to offer visitors looking for a leisure day out with its unique blend of history and heritage," said Mr Turner.

Anderton's interactive display, introduced last season, has proved a major draw over the past 12 months and with visitor numbers are holding up despite the tough economic climate.

The display focuses on the lives of those who designed, built and worked around the mighty structure. It was specifically commissioned to engage with audiences of all ages and features a complimentary blending of strong audio visual features.

Anderton sits amid some of the county's finest woodlands - and links are being developed to encourage visitors to stay and make a day of the surrounding countryside. After getting up close and personal with the impressive spectacle of the working structure from land or river, other attractions await close at hand.

A network of easy access pathways now links the boat lift with Marbury Country Park, Anderton Nature Reserve and the retail centre of nearby Northwich.

"Winning the Quality Assured Visitor Attraction award from Visit Britain maintains our profile on the wider stage, with visitors from further afield making up a higher percentage of our footfall," said Mr Turner.

VAQAS is the Visitor Attraction Quality Assurance Scheme. It is VisitBritain's quality assessment service for all types of visitor attractions throughout England

The assessment takes the form of an annual visit when the attraction is open to the public. An experienced quality assurance assessor gives the site a thorough examination - without making their presence known.

Each visit is followed by a report and if successful, accreditation of 'Quality Assured Visitor Attraction'.

The fully accessible operations centre and its grounds are open throughout the season, including Bank Holidays, until 1 November. For details about times and prices, call 01606 786777 or visit www.andertonboatlift.co.uk
