Police in Winsford and Northwich are on hand to make sure Halloween and Bonfire Night are fun for all this year.

Officers from the Winsford and Northwich Neighbourhood Policing Units will be carrying out special operations during the Halloween and Bonfire Night period aimed at tackling anti-social behaviour and other issues traditionally associated with this time of year.

The operation, which coincides with the national government campaign to tackle anti-social behaviour in local communities, Not in My Neighbourhood Week, will run from Friday October 23 until Saturday November 7.

Patrols will be increased, particularly in the areas where anti-social behaviour was reported last year.

Insp David Snasdell, of Winsford Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said: "We will have a special team, made up of police officers, Police Community Support Officers, Special Constables and Cheshire West and Chester Council Wardens in operation throughout the period with the intention of dealing with potential trouble makers."

"We are not out to spoil the fun for people who genuinely want to celebrate Halloween and Bonfire Night, but I want to be extremely clear that we will not tolerate anti-social and nuisance behaviour and will take robust action against anyone who is caught causing trouble."

The teams will be working with local shops and off licenses in the run up to the two celebrations to ensure laws on selling alcohol and fireworks are adhered to.

They will also be asking shops not to sell flour and eggs to youngsters over the Halloween period.

The team will be working under ArcAngel, Cheshire Constabulary's partnership approach to tackling alcohol related crime, to send letters to the parents of young people found with alcohol. They will also use their powers to confiscate alcohol from young people.

Insp Paul Loughlin of the Northwich Neighbourhood Policing Teams said: "Many problems experienced around this time of year are related to the consumption of alcohol and we will do everything within our power to ensure youngsters find their opportunities to obtain booze are severely restricted. Any under-age drinkers found with alcohol will have the drink confiscated."

"This approach will also be used in relation to fireworks and we are liaising with Trading Standards to look at the sale of fireworks to prevent them from getting into the wrong hands."

"There is nothing wrong with genuine trick or treating, but behaviour such as throwing eggs and flour at people or property will not be tolerated and we will take action against those responsible."

PCSOs will visit elderly and vulnerable residents in each area  - and those who have previously suffered at the hands of vandals and nuisance youths - to offer reassurance and to address any issues or concerns they might have.

Residents are also being offered flyers to put up in their windows to either tell Trick or Treaters they are welcome or to ask them not to call.

The leaflets are being delivered to homes in the area, are available from local shops and police stations or can be printed off on-line at www.cheshire.police.uk.

If you need to report any incidents of anti-social, nuisance or criminal behaviour in the run-up to, or during Halloween and Bonfire Night, please ring Cheshire Police on 0845 458 0000.
