A shoplifter has been arrested in Northwich, after being caught by a security guard and member of the public.

The 42-year-old from Wrexham was arrested on Tuesday November 3 at Sainsbury's in Venables Way at 12.10pm.

The store security guard spotted the shoplifter and tried to detain him until police arrived, but the man ran away and a store customer in his 60s also gave chase. The man was caught by the two security guard and customer and was arrested.

Both the security guard and the member of the public were slightly injured in the incident.

The 42-year-old was arrested on suspicion of assault, shoplifting and criminal damage and later released on police bail.

Police are also appealing for the owner of a dark coloured 4x4 that was damaged during the incident to come forward.

Insp Paul Loughlin said: "As the man was running away, he ran into a dark coloured 4x4 and damaged the passenger side wing mirror. It is possible the owner left the supermarket car park without noticing what had happened. I would appeal for them to come forward and report the incident to police, either by calling in at their local police station or by calling 0845 458 0000."
