WHO ATE ALL THE PIES???

A LIFELONG fan of Birtwisle's pies had his loyalty rewarded on Friday when he unknowingly bought the butchers' 30 millionth pie.
Stuart Bailey popped into the shop, in Witton Street, for his regular steak and ale pie and was astounded when his lunch was brought to him with a bottle of champagne, a winner's medal and a cheque for £100.

Birtwisle's organised the 30 millionth pie competition to mark the shop's 75 years in business. Nick Birtwisle, whose uncle Jack originally opened a shop in Church Road in 1934, kept a note of how many pies they baked after his dad Ian, who built the bakehouse and expanded the pie side of the business, started a record out of interest.
